How to Create Optimal Wellness – Let’s Start with Creativity
Hello Cosmic Revolutionary,
I always thought I was un-creative, that creativity was frivolous and silly. “Creativity” was a luxury – something that you can indulge in once you get your serious work done or you retire.
I’m not so sure how I squashed the glitter-loving part of myself.
Maybe it had something to do with Emma Johnson, the girl who could draw incredible life-like horses in second grade. Emma sat next to me and was the teacher’s delight. When it came time for our classroom “open house”, when the parents came to visit our second-grade room, it was Emma’s drawings that were posted in the front of the classroom for all to see – while my stick figure rendition of “What I Did Over the Summer Break” was hung in the very back of the room, next to the bookshelf in the corner, behind a plant….
When I was sixteen, I graduated from high school and headed to college early.
My goal was to write a novel and become a best-selling writer. My Dad’s response to my dream was to remind me that every writer wants to write the “Great American Novel” and that I should pick something more practical to do with my life. I should orient myself towards “real” work and get a “real” job.
So I majored in Journalism and imagined my early, very dramatic death defending “truth and justice” as a war correspondent. (That lasted about a year until I fell in love with babies and birth and became a midwife instead…I know…big plot twist…)
We are very well-trained to think of creativity as non-essential and maybe even a little silly.
When we trim the budget of schools, it’s art that is often one of the first subjects to be cut out. If money is the metric by which we measure value, science, math, and technology are way more “valuable” than art and creative self-expression.
The Torrance Scale is a powerful test that measures creativity and is a better indicator of success than the traditional IQ test. Since 1990, the global Torrance Scale scores have been declining steadily. Collectively we are becoming less “creative” at a time when our planet is facing challenges that require tremendous creativity to find the elegant solutions we need.
In 2017 I started adding creativity into my coaching practice and my workshops. Around that time I taught a couple of writer’s retreats with my bestie, Michelle Vandepas.
Michelle is an artist (in addition to being one of the world’s leading female publishers) and she always brought a big art box and set up an art table at every workshop we taught.
I was in LOVE with the colors, the ribbons, the glitter, the stickers, the blank canvases, the paint, the EVERYTHING… on the art table. It wasn’t long before I was doing my own “art” along with our students.
I began to add “art” to my own workshops.
I even led a four-day story-telling workshop with my professional students. They used their Human Design chart as a template for telling the story of their life.
Now, bear in mind, that I was used to watching people have profound breakthroughs from learning their Human Design, but adding story-telling and creativity to the process of learning about your chart…? Well, let me just say that there was a LOT of crying, hugging, giant breakthroughs, and more.
To this day, I have students from that workshop email me and ask me if I’m going to ever lead a workshop like that again. (I am. You can find out more HERE.)
The exponential impact that adding creativity and storytelling had to the experience of learning about the Human Design chart sparked the scientist in me. I went on to do research on the impact of rewriting your personal narrative on immune function. (The results? Telling a more empowered story can increase your immune response significantly.)
In recent years, more and more research is emerging that shows the power of using creativity, storytelling, and the right side of the brain (The Sensing Circuit in Human Design) to help people create optimal wellness and well-being.
Here are a few examples:
1. Research shows that we physically heal faster when we distort our perception of time. The more time we think has passed, the faster we heal. We can alter our perception of time and speed healing with storytelling.
2. People who rewrite their personal story through the lens of the “Heroes’ Journey” cultivate a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in their lives.
3. We can use storytelling to become more optimistic and increase longevity.
4. Stories and language can affect DNA.
5. Words can be programmed into radio frequency waves and used to splice DNA.
6. Trauma is stored in the part of the brain associated with current time. When we experience trauma and we don’t heal it, we can get stuck in a time loop that leaves us reacting to the trauma as if it’s still ongoing. Storytelling takes us “out of present time” and allows us to reframe the narrative and can be used to treat PTSD.
This is just a surface-level exploration of how story-telling can profoundly heal your personal story and help you create a better life – the life you desire.
The Bottom Line?
If you want to activate your innate creative power and manifest the life you dream of, you have to have a strong and aligned personal story that matches your dreams.
The Good News?
Rewriting your story is easy – and fun! By engaging the creative part of your brain and using authentic bibliography and intentional storytelling, you bypass the places in the brain where we store, fear, self-doubt, and resistance. Your imagination can be a therapeutic tool that helps you unlock the secrets you need to know to help you finally create the life you’ve been longing for.
If you’re ready for a radical reset to start the Quantum Human Design New Year, join me on Saturday, January 20 from 10 am-2 pm Central, for an online, LIVE 4-hour retreat, The StoryLab Experience: Healing Your Personal Narrative.
Using Quantum Human Design, directed and intentional storytelling prompts and activities, you’ll unlock the power of your innate creativity and rewrite your personal story.
In the StoryLab you’re going to learn how to use your Quantum Human Design Chart as an intentional storytelling tool.
You’ll use your Chart to break down the elements of your personal story, layer by layer, helping you discover your life purpose, your soul curriculum, and exactly what you need to do to reclaim sovereignty over your life script.
Through exercises with prompts and creative exploration, you’ll discover exactly which elements in your story need to be elevated.
You’ll learn what you need to overcome in your story, to strengthen your resilience and reclaim your natural creative power.
Most importantly, you will begin the process of de-conditioning all the places where you’ve internalized the story that somehow it’s not okay, or even safe for you to be who you are and how you are.
We’ll meet live online for four intentional and sacred hours – just you, your story, sacred time and space that you’ve created for yourself, and a powerful journey through the parts of your chart – and your story – so that you can take back control over the story you tell the world about Who You Truly Are.
We are always asked – yes there will be a recording.

A chat with Karen Curry Parker on woo, the power of language, Quantum Human Design™ and creating your life
In this episode Debby Levering speaks with Karen Curry Parker, leading expert on Human Design and creator of Quantum Human Design™.
She has penned many a book on the subject and I admit I was a bit nervous going into this interview, which you can probably hear in my voice. But hey, that’s the beauty of daring: being scared and doing it anyway, as long as it feels aligned!
We discuss what woo means to her and how she even squashed it for a while.
She opens up about her story and explains how we all have a story we are here to claim. We speak about how she started exploring the power of language and subsequently birthed Quantum Human Design™.
And we also touch upon what creativity means in relation to living your life.
Grab yourself a cup of anything and settle in for a great podcast!
